Why We Don't Take Insurance (and Why That's Good for You)

"You don't take my insurance?" It sounds counterintuitive, but opting out of insurance billing is exactly what lets Frontier Clinic offer more time, lower overhead, and direct access to your doctor.

It's usually the first question people ask when they hear about Frontier Clinic: "Wait, you don't take my insurance?" It sounds counterintuitive at first. Isn't insurance supposed to make healthcare more accessible? Here's the honest answer for why we built this practice outside the insurance system, and why that choice actually works in your favor.

Insurance Was Built for Catastrophes, Not Checkups

Health insurance, at its core, is designed to protect you from financially devastating events: a car accident, a cancer diagnosis, an emergency surgery. Somewhere along the way, it also became the mechanism most people use to pay for routine primary care, and that's where things started to break down.

Running everyday primary care through an insurance-based billing system means every visit, every phone call, and every lab order has to be coded, submitted, reviewed, and often appealed before the practice ever sees a dollar. That process requires staff, software, and time, all of which cost money. That money has to come from somewhere, and it usually comes out of the time your doctor has to spend with you.

What Taking Insurance Actually Costs a Practice

A typical primary care office needs a billing team just to keep the lights on. Insurance reimbursement rates for primary care visits are often low enough that a doctor has to see a high volume of patients each day just to cover overhead. That's the math behind the rushed seven-minute visit: it's not that your doctor doesn't care, it's that the system built around insurance billing forces a volume-based approach.

By not accepting insurance, Frontier Clinic removes that entire layer of overhead. No claims department, no waiting on reimbursement, no denied-claim appeals eating into the day. That savings gets passed directly into two things: lower overhead costs that keep membership pricing reasonable, and more time per patient because the practice isn't dependent on seeing 25-30 people a day to stay open.

You Still Get to Use Your Insurance

Not taking insurance for membership fees doesn't mean insurance disappears from your life. You'll still want a plan, ideally paired with an HSA or high-deductible option, to cover things a primary care membership isn't designed for: hospital stays, surgeries, specialist referrals, and emergency care. Frontier Clinic works alongside whatever coverage you have; it just isn't billed through it for your day-to-day primary care.

The Trade-Off, Stated Plainly

Here's the honest trade-off: you pay a membership fee directly, out of pocket, instead of a copay run through insurance. In exchange, you get a doctor who isn't managing a 2,500-patient panel, same or next-day appointments, direct access by phone or text, and visits that run as long as they need to.

For many patients, especially those managing chronic conditions, that trade is an easy one. Fewer surprise bills, more time with your doctor, and a relationship built on actually being known, not just processed.
